Mark qualified from the University of Huddersfield in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Podiatry. Following additional postgraduate education Mark commenced his post at the University Hospital Birmingham Foundation Trust (UHBFT) in 1996 initially supporting the clinical lead in Diabetic foot disease for the department.

One of the remits of the post was to develop Podiatric support for the large trauma and musculoskeletal populations and the service has developed within the Trust where he has worked for the last 13 years in the role of Clinical Specialist in Musculoskeletal and Trauma.

As well as an extensive trauma caseload involving both military and civilian patients, Mark also manages a large caseload in regard to inflammatory joint disease. This is an area where often the first signs of inflammatory disease occur at a foot and ankle level. A tremendous amount of research has occurred over the last decade around Podiatric involvement in this particular group and remains an area where mechanical (orthotic) management can have a real benefit.

Mark obtained his Masters degree in 2000 from NENE University. The Masters Thesis focused on the use of local anaesthetic as a therapeutic intervention for chronic heel pain. A number of other positive outcomes came from the study and Mark has developed a number of soft tissue injection techniques to aid with tissue repair for chronic soft tissue injuries.

In addition to the post at UHBFT Mark is clinical lead for Podiatry at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. These latter service developments focus on the mechanical aspects of foot and ankle problems. Mark remains committed to research in regard to foot and ankle function and works closely with engineering colleagues looking into specific conditions and their effect on gait.

Mark is co leading a large collaborative research project that is looking into medial tibial stress syndrome in military personnel. This project is looking at the influence of both proximal and distal factors responsible for this clinical entity.

Mark also works within a multidisciplinary team with The Foot and Ankle Clinic (www.thefootandankleclinic.com) based at the BMI Priory hospital and also has practising privileges at the Warwickshire Nuffield Hospital in Leamington Spa.

Marks work within the private sector incorporates a large proportion of sports related injuries, in particular running related injuries and Mark also provides musculoskeletal input to a number of professional sports clubs around the region covering Rugby, Cricket and Football.

An integral part of Marks NHS and private practice commitments is education in regard to foot and ankle management. Mark is involved with the Foot & Ankle Education program as part of his involvement with The Foot and Ankle Clinic in Birmingham. The clinic runs an annual education program looking at the assessment and treatment of specific foot and ankle conditions See links: TFAC2006 TFAC2007 TFAC2008 TFAC2009
